AI Won’t Replace You. It’ll Just Expose the Devs Who Never Learned to Code Without It.

Every junior dev I talk to right now is asking some version of the same question, even when they don’t say it out loud: if AI can already write this, why bother learning it properly?

I get why. But after 12+ years shipping production code — and after running a Claude Code training session for my own team earlier this year — here’s what I keep coming back to: it’s not here to replace you. It’s here to expose whether you actually understand what you’re shipping.

The devs still standing in five years won’t be the ones prompting fastest. They’ll be the ones who can review AI output the way they’d review a junior’s pull request — because that’s functionally what it is.

Wrote the longer version out properly. Link below if you want the full thing.

If 12+ years of getting this wrong and right the hard way can save even one junior dev from learning it the expensive way, it’s worth writing down.

Let me know what you’re seeing on your end — always keen to hear how this lands for people actually in it right now.
